There is a proud history of sport at Waratah High School - stretching back to The Newcastle Boys High years. Many Regional, State, National and even some International sportspeople have attended this school - and when they speak of their school days, they have fond memories of the fun and success they had in their chosen sports.

Recent Times

Sport still holds a proud place at Waratah High. With the merging of three schools into Callaghan College, students now have more opportunity to participate in sport. With more students participating, this brings extra competition for places in CHS Sporting Teams.

An example of this is the College Boys' Open Soccer Team, who made it to the Quarter Finals in the State Knockout Competition in 2007. Most of this team were made up of ex-Waratah students from 2006.

There are also a number of Under 15 CHS Sporting Competitions for which the Campus enters under its own name. Buckley Shield Rugby League is always popular with the Under 14s, as is Baker Shield Cricket (Under 14s). With the College system, if a junior campus sportsperson is good enough they can be selected for Open Teams in any sport. Waratah regularly enter Basketball, Table Tennis & Lawn Bowls. In recent years, Waratah students have represented Open Teams in Tennis, Soccer, Rugby League, Basketball and Hockey.

Rugby League is definitely the most popular sport at Waratah High, with soccer not too far behind. Every year the number of boys wanting to be selected in the various age divisions has grown. In 2007, Waratah entered a Girls Under 16 Rugby Union tournament and won quite convincingly. Good to see the girls showing the boys how it is done!!!
